Cambridge chase promotion
Cambridge are set to play their two most important games in many years with the club ready to represent the Waikato/Bay of Plenty against Waitemata, the champions of Auckland and Northern. The matches will decide which of the clubs will win promotion to football’s Northern League next year.
The first leg of the two-match series will be played at Cambridge’s John Kerkhof Park at 2.45pm on Saturday September 19, with the second leg taking place in Auckland a week later.
The combined scores of the matches will decide which region emerges as victors.
Cambridge have qualified for the play-offs, having led the WaiBOP Premiership all season.
The club expects a large crowd for the home game on Saturday, and will take a convoy of supporters to Auckland the following week.
Meanwhile, the Cambridge club has been thanked by WaiBOP Football for its successful hosting of ASB Premiership games over the past two summers.
This follows a decision by WaiBOP and New Zealand Football to transfer this summer’s matches to Waikato Stadium so that six of the matches can be more easily televised.
WaiBOP Football’s chief executive Mark Christie said: ““We would like to offer our thanks to Cambridge FC for their fantastic backing over the last two ASB Premiership seasons.
“Both the venue and the now legendary Volunteer Army ensured WaiBOP United could operate at the level required for national league football.
“The Club, Waipa District Council and local supporters have provided fantastic support with Cambridge contributing towards WaiBOP United having the highest crowd attendances across the National Men’s League in 2014/15 season, abd hopefully this relationship will continue.
“John Kerkhof Park, the home venue of Cambridge FC will remain on the radar for National League matches in the future, especially with their clubroom expansion nearing completion.”
Cambridge president Peter Martens said the club was disappointed to not host games this summer but members would continue to support WaiBOP United as it represented all the clubs and players in our region.
