LEGENDS MAKE FINAL

The Amcal Cambridge Legends advanced to their 2nd Waikato Cup Final in two years after a harder than expected Semi Final against Waihi on Saturday...

The visitors came with an obvious game plan to shut down the Reds passing game and in the early exchanges their strategy seemed to be paying off with the Holders struggling to find their rhythm.

After 15 minutes the home side finally broke the deadlock with a well constructed move involving Tony Dikmans, Micky Welten and Mark Jones, with the finishing touches applied by Tony McIsaac inside the six yard box to open the scoring. The Reds then doubled the advantage 5 minutes later when Lance Brown and Marc Thomas exchanged passes and released Coach McIsaac outwide who crossed to an unmarked Blair Ludlam who headed in from close range. The visitors then got back into the contest when Aidan Taylor was judged to have brought down the Waihi striker in the area and the spot kick was converted despite the legends keeper almost pulling off a save from 12 yards.

Blair Ludlam then restored the 2 goal margin with a neat finish after Richie Hill met a Richie Mita freekick and passed to Blair Cooper who found the Golden Boot superbly...

3 - 1 up at the break, but the visitors still had some fight left and the legends were struggling to string passes together, but defensively were well in command with Blair Cooper and Richie Mita moping everything up at the back...

Paul Hughes, Robbie Brettell and Pete Simpson were introduced off the bench but the fight had gone from the visitors and the legends cruised through to the final whistle...

Final Score Cambridge 3 Waihi 1

JASON BEERE BUILDING CAMBRIDGE C vs. CLAUDELANDS ROVERS B

A heart breaking defeat 2-3

Cambridge were looking to book a place in the Waikato Cup final at Gower Park next week and were full of confidence going into Saturday’s game in Cambridge.  The opening chance fell to the away side who hit the post after a good build-up, and minutes later Cambridge had a goal disallowed for offside following a mad scramble in the Claudelands penalty area.  With Cambridge on top it was only a matter of time until the opening goal came and like buses they came together.  The first goal was smashed into the bottom corner from 4 inches by Russ Foster and the second from Adam Squarepants after a good build up involving Colin Rea.   It could easily have been three but for a poor finish by Joel Heart with the goal beckoning. Unfortunately the away team pulled a goal back just before the break when a free kick was awarded at the edge of the area and the resulting shot beat Cale in the goal.

The second half was a very even contest; with both teams giving their all.  With twenty minutes left, the away team equalised from a left wing cross which was headed into the far post.  Minutes later the Referee awarded a penalty to the away side, even though he was 25 metres away from play.  It was just a shame he did not use his Ben-10 X-ray vision throughout the whole game.  The resulting spot kick was converted and Cambridge had fifteen minutes to push for an equaliser.  The best chance fell to Ron Kardas, who unfortunately was unable to direct his header into the undefended goal and the game finished in a valiant defeat for the home side.  The season has finished and after a top five finish in the league and a Burnley-esk cup, run every member of the team can be proud of their efforts this season.  Good luck to young Cale, who next weekend has a trial in Fielding for New Zealand under 19’s.  Good luck also to the Cambridge Legends who won their semi-final to make the Waikato Cup Final for the second straight year.

LEGENDS MAKE SEMI'S

The Amcal Cambridge Legends advanced to the Waikato Cup Semi-Finals on Saturday after a hard fought and longer than normal match against Waikato Unicol B...

With a number of regulars missing the Reds looked like half the team they were the previous week and struggled against a determined student body. Blair Ludlam and Marc Thomas had early chances to calm the nerves but both efforts lacked direction. A makeshift back four of Paul Hughes, Richie Hill, Mark Jones and Robbie Brettell seemed to cope with most of what the home side attackers had to offer, however the students managed to take the lead after Aidan Taylor saved superbly only to see the rebound miss-kicked into the top corner.

1 nil down at the break and desperate to find a goal, midfielder's Tony Dikmans, Micky Welten and Bevan Mayo pushed forward in search of an equalizer. Tony McIsaac was denied twice from close range and then Bevan Mayo popped a calf and limped out of the contest. 14 year old Josh Thomas entered the battle along with Pete Simpson and it was the youngster that saved the Legends with a sweat volley off his fathers corner that was handled on the line by a Unicol defender and the ref pointed to the spot. Robbie Brettell stepped up and converted the penalty with a minute left on the clock.

So it was into a half hour of extra time and with the momentum with the Reds, Tony McIsaac wrestled his way into the box and found young Josh Thomas who made no mistake from inside the six to break the deadlock. The Legends managed to hang on for the remaining 20 minutes to take the match and write another chapter in Legends folklore.

Final Score Cambridge 2 Waikato Unicol B 1 (aet)

Player of the day went to Josh Thomas, with great games from Robbie Brettell, Mark Jones and Aidan Taylor...

Next Saturday the Legends take on Waihi in the Waikato Cup Semi-final at Vogel Street, kick 2.00pm... See you there.

JASON BEERE BUILDING CAMBRIDGE C vs. Ham North A

On a glorious Saturday afternoon Cambridge were looking to power into the semi-finals of the Waikato Cup.  With a few players unavailable and against a strong Ham North team, it was going to be a difficult afternoon.  After a quiet start the away side struck first when the big centre forward broke free and slotted home the opener against the run of play.  Full credit to the home side who replied almost immediately when Ken Graham rose to beat the keeper from a Ron Kardas free-kick on the right.  A few minutes later, the home side took the lead when Joe Gifford slammed a loose ball into the top corner from 30 yards.  Cambridge were now on top, with the defence never in any trouble and Slugger McNicol playing the dangerous forwards out of the game.

The third goal came when Colin Rea out muscled a defender and the resulting shot deflected off the keeper and found Adam Squarepants in acres of space; he coolly beat the forlorn keeper.  It was now champagne football, and only a matter of time until a forth was added.  When it did arrive it was worth the wait; a cross from Joe Gifford on the left with pinpoint accuracy was met by Rob “one leg” Cox who had the simplest of finishes. The away side did score a consolation goal near the end, but the result was never in doubt.  A fantastic result sees Cambridge in the semi-finals, where they play Claudelands B on the 19th Sept at John Kerkof Park Kick-off 2pm.

LEGENDS EASE INTO QUARTER'S

The Amcal Cambridge Legends cruised into the Quarter Finals of the Waikato Cup after an emphatic victory over Claudeland Rovers C1 on Saturday...

It was show time right from the whistle with the Reds appearing to be well and truly in the mood and it wasn't long until Blair Ludlam got the scoring underway after he received a perfect pass from his Skipper, Micky Welten and the school teacher did the rest. Against the run of play the visitors replied immediately with a loopy old effort from outside the box, which deceived Aidan Taylor in goal and the scores were level. Coach McIsaac was then fouled in the box, which allow Centre Back, Blair Cooper to tuck away his first for the year. Richie Hill and Bevan Mayo were a constant threat down the left hand side of the field and it was those two who combined to release Blair Ludlam and his finish from a tight angle was first class. A little Marc Thomas magic created the 4th for Bevan Mayo who made no mistake after getting clear of his marker and passing it passed the keeper.  Blair Ludlam completed a first half hat trick with almost the final act of the first half after the Rovers keeper blocked a Mark Jones header into the path of Ludlam who doesn't miss from there!

In the 2nd spell the Reds continued to entertain with Lance Brown and Robbie Brettell being introduced into the action but it took almost 30 minutes for the next goal to arrive with Richie Hill powerfully heading home his first for 2009 from a Coach McIsaac cross. There were chances a plenty right until the final whistle with some irresistible football on show, but the Reds couldn't add to the tally.

Final Score Cambridge 6 Claudeland Rovers 1

JASON BEERE BUILDING CAMBRIDGE C vs. Ham North Ninjas

After a unconvincing win the previous Sunday against West Hamilton E, we were again up against an E team in the last 16 of the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup.  The Ham North side had cruised to the top of the E Division and on paper looked a far better side.  The game started with a hiss and a roar, and within 15 minutes Cambridge could have been 3 goals up.  A snap shot from Russ Foster was well saved and a chance each from Colin Rea and Adam Squarepants was squandered with only the keeper to beat.  When the goal did arrive it followed a poor goal kick which was headed back towards the goal by Joel Heart, Russ Foster was the first to react and he calmly chipped the keeper from the edge of the area.  As usual in the latter stages of the season, the midfield of Kardas, Cox, Heart and Squarepants was dominant and always posed a threat going forward.  The away side nearly got on level terms just before the interval when Aussie Cale had to make a point blank save.

The second half again set off at a hectic pace with chances at both ends.  After a terrible rugby tackle in the area, Cambridge gave away a penalty and as everyone held their breath, Cale again produced a fantastic save and Ken cleared the rebound.  A few minutes later a long clearance from Gaz in defence found Russ Foster, and with a defender close by he beat the keeper at the near post to extend the lead.  A late consolation goal from the visitors set up an exciting last ten minutes and after a few scares, the home side played out time.  Foster missed a sitter which would have given him his hat trick.  Next week Ham North A in the Cup quarter final at 2pm in Cambridge

FIRSTS IN LAST MINUTE DRAW

On Saturday Cambridge Men's 1st team, sponsored by The Clubhouse Sports Bar, travelled to Waiuku for this week's Northern League division one clash. Cambridge began well and came close to opening the scoring when a Blair Ludlam header was well saved by the Waiuku keeper. The save spurred the home side whose fast agressive, long ball football led to two well taken goals before the half time whistle saved Cambridge from further embarrassment. At two nil down, going into the second half, things looked very grim for the visitors. However, Cambridge began to string some passes together and were soon back in contention with two brilliantly taken goals from Jason Chewins and Mark Ryan. At 2-2 Cambridge were now by far the better team and their pressure paid off when Ludlam scored his trademark goal with a simple tap in after some excellent work on the left. The Reds seemed to have the game in the bag when in injury time Josh Wilson, being the last man, was red carded for a foul. Waiuku, taking advantage of the situation, equalised with practically the last kick of the game. This was a great fight back from Cambridge but a three all draw was still a disappointment. Man of the match for the Reds was Dima Slack. Chewins, Roly Hay and Josh Powell also had good games. Next week The 1sts are on a bye.

RESERVES OUT OF WAIKATO CUP ON PENELTIES

Cambridge faced Claudlands C1’s in Hamilton for the first round of the Waikato Cup. It was a tense affair as both teams battled hard on a terrible pitch. The C division team where punching above their weight; determined to claim the scalp of an A division team. The early exchanges went to Claudlands but as the game wore on Cambridge became more dominant; chances falling to strikers Grant Mcilmurray and Jamie Coomber but none could be converted. With about 15 minutes to play the deadlock was broken, Dave Casbolt found Alex Ball who went round one and whipped in a cross to the back post, Coomber knocked down to the on-rushing Lee Turpit, he beat one and slotted home from close range for his second in as many games. Claudlands pushed forward but the backline looked comfortable until the changing point of the game. A ball was knocked into the area and goalkeeper Paul MaCann seemed to have claimed it comfortably until the C’s striker clearly fouled the keeper and Claudlands scored in the resulting open net; 1-1 with two minutes of normal time left. Coach Steve Thomas came on and provided some strength in the air but to no avail. As both teams began to tire the game drifted towards penalties and sure enough the game was to be decided by spot kicks. Five brave souls stood up but unfortunately only Coomber and Turpit scored. MaCann came close to saving three but could only keep one out and the Reserves lost 4-2.4-2. Players of the day went to the impressive Gifford brothers on their Reserve team debut. Next week into the plate cup.

LEGENDS MAKE FINAL 16

The Amcal Cambridge Legends cruised into the last 16 of the Waikato Cup with a comfortable win at home against FOSS on Sunday...

With a number of positional changes made for this match, the Waikato Cup holders struggled to get any cohesion in the early exchanges. The quality of the football wasn't helped by the state of the number 1 pitch but Mark Jones, Blair Ludlam and Micky Welten couldn't blame the Cambridge Bobble for their early misses.

Nil all at the break and the Reds started the 2nd half with a little more purpose with Marc Thomas, Richie Mita and Richie Hill asserting control in the midfield. With half an hour to go the Reds finally broke through when Micky Welten blocked a goalkeepers clearance from close range and the ball sailed into the net to break the deadlock. A powerful Tony Dikmans free kick made it 2 nil and the contest was over 5 minutes later when Tony McIsaac, Marc Thomas and Paul Hughes combined to present Blair Ludlam with a driving header to complete the scoring...

Final Score Cambridge 3 FOSS 0

Player of the day went to Marc Thomas with Tony Dikmans, Lance Brown and Aidan Taylor all having strong games... Next week the Legends play another Waikato Cup match with the team and venue yet to be confirmed.

JASON BEERE BUILDING CAMBRIDGE C vs. UNICOL C

On an afternoon that felt like spring, Cambridge took on the always youthful University side at home.  As usual the home side started slowly and were one down soon into the game following some poor defending and a classy finish that beat Cale from close range.  After the initial shock, Cambridge started to take control, and with the midfield of Ron, Rob, Joel and Ken winning everything in the middle it was only a matter of time until an equaliser was found.  When it did eventually arrive, it was a sublime finish from Adam Squarepants following a lovely move which was started by young Tom Rea at right back.  Going into the break it was still one all, but with all the play, the home side should have scored more goals.

The second half was very similar to the first, with some of the best football that has been played all season.  The defence never looked in any trouble and this allowed Big Russ Dixon to push forward into the midfield.  Somehow a draw looked the likely score as Cambridge had no luck in front of goal.  With the last spin of the wheel, Russ Foster was pushed into attack (some say it was not before time) to try and force a win.  It turned out to be a master stroke, as within five minutes Russ had managed to snare two goals that Robbie Blake would have been proud of.   He could also have had a hat-trick but for some very dodgy refereeing.  Final score 3-1, and a top four finish in the first season for the team.  Next stop the Waikato cup.

C'S THROUGH TO SECOND ROUND OF THE CUP

1st round Waikato cup

Sunday afternoon away vs. West Hamilton E, Cambridge started the brighter with some neat passing and moving which just lacked the final ball, clear cut chances were hard to come by. Joel, Rob, Alex, Albie working hard in the midfield to try and create something

For Colin and Adam upfront, a nice cross from Joel was flicked on by Alex as Adam attacked the ball at the back post the ball dropping in the six yard box for Colin to poke home.

Cambridge could have and should have gone on to take a decisive lead in at the break but a mix up from the defensive line up of Ken, Joe, Russell D and wozza gave west ham a quick break away and left Cale one on one with there striker not much the young keeper could do 1 – 1 at the break.

The 2nd half was much like the 1st plenty of possession for Cambridge with no final outcome west ham played the long ball game and worked hard with 5 at the back, full time still level at 1-1.

Into extra time with the roast chicken well done, and the spuds a bit burnt it was same again both teams working hard but to no avail the inevitable penalty shoot was to come ,

Cambridge up 1st Russ Dixon (scored) Alibie (missed) west ham having scored there’s Colin (scored) Ken (scored) Adam (scored) west ham to score and it was all over until Cale pulled of a great save to put it level Alex was next up and some how his miss hit penalty trickled into the corner, a nervous looking west ham defender stepped up and missed putting the ball high and wide.

Cambridge win 5-4 on pens

UGLY SCEENS AT FIRSTS LOSE

On Saturday Cambridge men's 1st team were beaten 1-0 by local rivals Ngarawahia in a very competative Northern League fixture. Cambridge had the better chances in the first half and were unlucky not to have taken the lead when Russell Foster had a goal disallowed for offside. This was a very harsh call as the goal looked to be a perfectly good one. At half time the score was 0-0 with neither side gaining dominance. The second half was somewhat of a stalemate until Ngarawahia scored the only goal of the game when the ball was drilled past keeper Ryan McNamara from just inside the box. Cambridge were stung into action and pushed hard for a deserved equaliser. Ants Hobern's enthusiasm got the better of him and he was red carded for a second bookable offence. Even though Cambridge were down to 10 men they still fought hard to draw level but it was not to be, the game finishing 1-0. At the end of the game the Ngarawahia fullback, Michael Cooper, was guilty of head butting a Cambridge player and now faces a justifiably lengthy ban. Even though Ngarawahia took the three points they still have a lot to learn in the way of sportsmanship and acceptable off the field conduct. This was a game Cambridge did not deserve to lose. Man of the match was Josh Wilson who was outstanding in the heart of the defence. Patrick Woodlock, Jason Chewins and Adrain Clark were also excellent. Next week Cambridge are away to Waiuku.

RESERVES FINISH SEASON WITH BIG WIN

Cambridge travelled to a sodden Hamilton University to take on Waikato Unicol in the last Waikato A game of the season for the Reserves. Player positions were drawn from a hat and in the first 20 minutes this looked to have been a bad decision as Cambridge came under constant pressure from the fit University team. But the defense Started to take control with centre back Dave Casbolt working well with wing-backs Jamie Coomber and Lee Turpit. Sweeper Alex Ball was handed the captaincy in his final game before heading back to the Uk for a few years and the decision seemed to have paid off when he choose keeper Paul McCann to take a penalty for handball. The Reserves keeper fired the spot kick in the roof of the net. The midfield of Brett Clark, Coach Steve Thomas, Micky Miller and Grant Mcilmurray won everything in the air and a superb Clark ball set up the second. Forward Dave Fisher stuck the pass first time with aplomb into the bottom right-hand corner to give Cambridge a two goal lead. Cambridge were on fire and when they received a free-kick on the edge of the area, striker Simon Lockwood  struck the ball beautifully and the keeper could only palm the ball into the path of Turpit who slotted home from the tightest of angles. In the last 20 minutes  fine tackles from Ball and Coomber, a great save from MaCann and a bit of luck from the woodwork ensured the score remained 3-0. The Reserves recorded their best result of the season leaving the Coach with a selection headache ahead of their Waikato Cup match against Claudlands C1 next week. Cambridge A finished a solid fourth place in the league for 2009.

LEGENDS SIGN OFF WITH A DRAW

The Waikato A Division Champions, Amcal Cambridge Legends took on 2nd placed Hamilton Wanderers in the final league game of the season at Porritt Stadium on Saturday.

Fresh from being crowned champions last weekend the Reds were keen to finish 2009 on a high and the intent was evident from the start with Mark Jones, Blair Ludlam and Tony McIsaac all going close in the early exchanges. Despite the muddy pitch both sides still tried to play football, with Tony Dikmans, Micky Welten and Bevan Mayo combining well in the middle of the park. Late in the half a fantastic point blank save from keeper Aidan Taylor insured the champs went into the break on level terms.

The 2nd spell started with a flood of goals with the home side taking the lead and then a Paul Hughes pass found Bevan Mayo and his trickery out wide and cross was met by Coach McIsaac who headed home the equalizer. 5 minutes later a Coach McIsaac free kick was met by Blair Ludlam who's superb header floated into the net for the Reds to take the lead. It was all hands to the pump for the last 20 minutes, with Richie Mita, Blair Cooper and the impressive Richie Hill defending for their lives, but they couldn't prevent the home side from leveling the scores in the dying minutes of the game...

Final Score Cambridge 2 Hamilton Wanderers 2

Player of the Day went to Richie Hill, with strong games from Marc Thomas, Mark Jones and Blair Cooper.

JASON BEERE BUILDING CAMBRIDGE C vs. Hamilton North C

Deserved 2-0 win

After a run of poor results Cambridge was looking to gain some much needed confidence against a poor Ham North side.  From the kick off Cambridge swarmed all over the visitors, moving past them at will and creating chance after chance.  Things got worse for the visitors when their playmaker had to leave the field because of injury which reduced Ham North to ten men.  At half time it was somehow still 0-0, but with Harry Gifford, Tony and Ben having fantastic games, and Rob Cox dictating play at the heart of the defence, a goal was not far away.

Tom Rea replaced Harry at half time and slotted into right back like a glove.  Adam Squarepants broke the deadlock with a fantastic finish just after the re-start; he has been a good addition to the squad and looks to be finding his feet.  The second followed soon after when Colin Rea was brought down in the box by a man on a grassy knoll and converted the resulting penalty.  He should have had a second soon after but the referee unfortunately was unsighted when a collision in the box saw Colin convert the loose ball.  The game ended 2-0 and it was a much improved display, with everyone playing the ball to feet and working for each other.  Everyone had good games with Rob Cox, Harry Gifford, Colin and Tom Rea and the ever dependable Ron in midfield.  The defence was particular strong with Ben and Big Russ Dixon snuffing out any chances.  Next week The C team are at home against Unicol kick-off 2.45pm

FIRSTS FALL TO BATTING DEFEAT

On Saturday Cambridge men's 1st team, sponsored by the Clubhouse Sports Bar, were beaten 3-1 in Auckland by promotion chasers Mangere United. Cambridge got off to the worst possible start when a defensive mix up gifted Mangere with an opening goal after just 3 minutes. The score was doubled a little while later when a long range free kick presented yet another soft goal to the homeside. To compound their plight goalkeeper Ryan McNamara was injured and played the rest of the game in pain. With the score 2-0 at half time Cambridge were left with a mountain to climb. Having been outplayed in the first half Cambridge came out battling for every ball and soon had Mangere on the back foot. Man of the match Jason Chewins scored early and the Reds were back in the match. For 30 minutes Cambridge were on top rattling the Mangere defence and creating enough chances to level the game. However, with 15 minutes remaining and against the run of play, the Mangere centre forward completed his hatrick with the goal of the game.  This defeat has put Cambridge in a precarious position in the bottom half of the table. Players that impressed on the day, along with Chewins, were Josh Wilson, Danny Moore, Albert Rodrigues and Ants Hobern. Next week Cambridge host local rivals Ngarawahia in the big local derby, kick off 2.45pm.

RESERVES DREW AS LEGENDS CROWNED WAIKATO A CHAMPS

Cambridge Reserves hosted Hamilton North in their last home game of the Waikato A League season. After a stirring speech from coach Steve Thomas Cambridge came out of the blocks quickly; early chances not put away by Jamie Coomber and Alex Ball. The defence of Brett Clark, Mike Miller, Simon Lockwood and Dave Fisher held out all that Ham North could throw at them; Lockwood performing heroics against their dangerous striker. The final chance of the half fell to Ball but his half volley was saved well by the keeper. Soon after the break Cambridge found themselves 1-0 down; the defence seemed to have dealt with the danger but the ball bounced loose and a cheeky, weak over-head kick looped over goalkeeper Paul McCann. The reserves continued to press and their pressure was rewarded; a loose ball bounced up to Grant Mcilmurray who headed over the keeper from 15 yards. Lee Turpit and Nathan Claridge fought hard in the middle of the park. The game started to get a little niggle and a Lockwood free kick resulted in a delicate Blackstock header giving Cambridge the lead. The defence continued to work valiantly but the pressure soon boiled over with players from both sides receiving reprimandeds for handbags. Dave Martins came on for his last appearance before a move to Auckland but it wasn’t enough to stop the final goal of the game which fell to North with a classy finish; final score 2-2. Player of the day going Simon Lockwood for his performance at the back with strong games from Ball, Fisher, Miller and stand in referee Steve Thomas! Next week away to Waikato Unicol, 2.45 kick off. Congratulations to new Waikato A champ’s Cambridge Legends; taking the mantel from the Reserves and insuring the championship remains in Cambridge.

LEGENDS TAKE THE TITLE

The Amcal Cambridge Legends took on FOSS at Vogel Street on Saturday knowing that just a point would secure them the Waikato A Division title for 2009...

The Reds started slowly and looked as if the players minds were on the nights celebrations to come, but the champs soon sprung into life with chances falling to Blair Ludlam and Richie Hill before Tony McIsaac latched on to a Aidan Taylor clearance and headed the ball on to Bevan Mayo who stoked the ball passed the keeper to settle the nerves. As the half drew to a close, skipper Micky Welten and midfield partner Mark Jones began to dominate the midfield battle and centre backs, Richie Mita and Blair Cooper were making it look easy at the back.

The champs took a 1 nil lead into the break and straight from the re-start Robbie Brettell and Paul Hughes began to reek havoc down the flanks but the home side couldn't find the killer blow. The return of the injured, Tony Dikmans had an almost immediate result when the sparky received a pass from Pete Simpson just outside the box and his thunderbolt shot gave the FOSS keeper no chance and secured all 3 points.

Final Score Cambridge 2 FOSS 0

Man of the Match went to Blair Cooper, with Mark Jones, Micky Welten and Richie Mita also having strong games.

After winning the Waikato B title and Waikato Cup last year the Legends can be justifiably proud of winning the Waikato A title in 2009. With the title secured the celebrations were long and loud after the match.

Coach McIsaac and his Legends have one game remaining next week against 2nd place Hamilton Wanderers at Porritt Stadium, kick off 2.45pm.

JASON BEERE BUILDING CAMBRIDGE C vs. TOKOROA C

Hammered 5-1

On Saturday Cambridge played host to the Championship winning Tokoroa side, and after 35 minutes we realised that there was a reason for that.  Through poor defending, a midfield that was over run and an opposition that knew each other’s game inside out, the home side were four down in no time.  It could have been much worse had Cale not be on top form again in the goals.  At half time changes were needed and made; Big Ben McNicol was moved into centre half with orders to follow the big Tokoroa forward wherever he went, even if that meant to the toilet.

The second half was a much improved performance with Ben having their forward in his pocket.  Tokoroa did score a fifth by way of a lovely finish by Warrick, beating Cale at the far post.  All the endeavour of Adam upfront and Ron on the left wing was repaid when they both combined for a consolation goal near the end of the game which leaves Ron only 2 goals behind Ken on the scoring charts.  Tokoroa are easily the strongest team in the league and probably should move to the A grade.  Full credit to Cambridge, they never gave up and battled right to the end and really could have scored two or three more goals with a bit of luck.  Just a reminder to Tony that he owes everyone in the team $3 for his leaving present now he decided not to go back to the UK.  Next week The C team are at home against Unicol kick-off 2.45pm
