Cambridge first team player Jason Chewins is making a name for himself , this was highlighted by the recent article by Matt Richens in the Waikato Times:

Cambridge's Northern League soccer club are a small club used to doing it tough.

They battled at the bottom of the first division last year and though they have a key group of talented young players among their squad, it's tough to bring in the big names.

But this year, they're a team that can compete. They upset fellow Waikato team Ngaruawahia, handing them their first loss of the season.

A lot of their success comes down to former English pro Jason Chewin the 38-year-old has a little more experience than his team-mates; he played a record 489 games for then non-league side Aldershot Town.

Mainly a left back for the South England side, Chewins has a bigger role for Cambridge playing centre back or in the midfield.

His coach, Mike Woodlock, sings his praises, but the quietly spoken Chewins talks down his achievements.

After moving to Cambridge to be with family, he thought he'd just be hanging up his boots, after nearly 500 games in 10 seasons. But a few social games last year and he was asked to play firsts. "I thought why not play to the highest level I can," he said. That goes as far as NZFC if he should be asked to trial. He acknowledges his top speeds are long behind him, but Chewins' fitness is still up there, as it should be: he's a personal trainer.

Good on him for still enjoying Northern League football in Cambridge, it's a long way from playing against Gianfranco Zola and Bobby Zamora and playing in a handful of FA Cups. "This team is good," he said. "We've got some good results, and we've let a couple of results slip away." He said the game here wasn't too different from the non-league football he was playing in the UK, but it was "a bit" slower and less aggressive. Woodlock was worried Chewins was going to be signed by another club. "We need him, he's a real asset to the club. He's such a professional, on and off the park.

Chewins signs for Waikato

WAIKATO FOOTBALL CLUB MEDIA RELEASE: WEDNESDAY 29 JULY 2009

Waikato FC’s off-season recruiting drive has netted current Cambridge player with Jason Chewins agreeing to join the club for the 2009/2010 New Zealand Football Championship (NZFC) season. Waikato FC placed a formal offer to Chewins this week and the former Aldershot professional has confirmed his intentions to play for the local franchise. “The Waikato FC revival is well and truly on the march,” said Waikato FC Development Officer James Raffan. “Jason has seen what we’ve set in motion here and the standard of players we want to bring together at the club.  “Quality attracts quality and we are delighted to add another player with the experience and skill that Jason possesses.  “Jason played a huge part in Aldershot’s success in the Conference League and will be an experienced addition to our squad,” said Raffan. The 38-year-old defensive midfielder made his name at Aldershot where he was named Player of the Year in 1999 and 2002 before bowing out of non-league football in 2006. “The NZFC is a bit of an unknown to me but I am looking forward to the challenge. As long as I am fit and able to maintain my standards I will continue to play as high as I can,” Chewins said. “When I came to New Zealand I thought my playing days were over – I didn’t even have a pair of boots. I joined Cambridge to develop a social network and I’ve enjoyed playing there and began to realise how much I missed football.” Chewins is now a stalwart of the Cambridge Northern League side. Waikato FC Coach Dave Edmondson said Chewin’s signature is another significant addition to a squad that is determined to make their mark in the NZFC this season. “Jason is a fantastic acquisition and brings added experience and toughness to our team.  I’m delighted he has decided to join the club,” Edmondson said.  Chewins joins a raft of players in signing for the Ngaruawahia-based club with locals Alex Barlow (Ngaruawahia United) and Paul Stewart (Melville United) confirmed earlier this week. Auckland-based players Stuart Hogg, Joel Mathews and player/coach Graham Pearce have also confirmed their commitment to Waikato FC for next season.
