Cambridge trio selected for UK tour

Three promising Cambridge footballers have been selected to tour the United Kingdom to face some of the sport’s best-known clubs.

Defender Harry Gifford (16), midfielder Peter Loyd (17) and forward Daniel Podjursky (17) will represent Tasman United, a selection of leading under 18 players from around New Zealand.

The trio have all made their debuts this season for Cambridge FC’s first team in the Northern Regional League, as well as playing for Cambridge High School’s first team.

Tasman United will play up to 10 matches against youth teams from professional UK clubs and fixtures are currently being considered by Premier League clubs Chelsea, Aston Villa and West Bromwich Albion, the club that employs former Cambridge player and current All White Chris Wood.

This is the fourth tour by Tasman United and previous trips have led to contracts being offered to New Zealand players including Lance Heslop (offered two-year scholarship at Aston Villa), Mark Withers and Michael Built (both signed by Northampton Town).

Cambridge’s three players are now seeking sponsorship to help them raise the $5,500 each required to help fund their tour and the chance to develop their football skills.

They can be contacted through Cambridge FC’s assistant first team coach, Josh Easby, on 021 0558854.

After that, Cambridge play at home twice in succession - against Mangere United and North Shore United.

Club appoints new first team coach

Cambridge FC have appointed former coach Mike Woodlock as the replacement for Andrew Treanor who is relocating to Western Australia at the end of July.

Woodlock coached the first team last year in the Northern League Division 1 and teams up with current assistant Josh Easby for the remaining nine games of the season. The pair aim to consolidate the club's place in the new second division, which begins next week, and help us build a squad capable of representing the club at the highest possible level over the next few years.

Coach Treanor (34) is moving to Perth for family reasons and says he's sad to be leaving Cambridge but will be supportive of the squad and its new coach until he departs.

Cambridge duo named in Northern League's Top 10

Goalkeeper Ryan 'Oz' McNamara (left) and midfield/forward Gareth Clark have been named in the Lotto Northern League first division's Top 10 players for May.

The recognition comes from voting by opposing team's coaches and the votes go towards finding the league's Players of the Year.

McNamara ended May in equal 4th place for his outstanding performances between the sticks, only two points behind the division's Player of the Month, Ellerslie striker Nathan Palmer who leads the scoring chart with 15 goals. Clark's much-improved workrate and persistence up front saw him in equal 7th place on the monthly table.

Club helps Cambodian kids

Cambridge FC are about to win some new supporters - who live in Cambodia.

Members of the club have donated shirts, shorts and footballs that are being taken to Cambodia to give to needy children by a group representing Cambridge Elim Church.

Team leader Graham Clark said the kit will be distributed to residents in the Svay Rieng district.

"We will be going into the villages were the children have no clothes and we will be able to give them something to wear, which is wonderful," he said. The church group has been working to help the Cambodian people since 2001.

Waikato Cup gets underway

Five Cambridge sides start their cup campaigns this weekend as the Soccer Shop Waikato Cup gets underway.

The Amcal Cambridge Legends travel to Waikato Unicol A2 (kick off 2.30pm), while the Cambridge Athletic B side heads to Otorohanga for a 12.30pm clash at Domain Drive.

Harry Bomans' D1 side looks to reverse their recent league form, going into a home tie against Te Awamutu C at John Kerkhof Park No. 4 (kick off 12.45pm). But the clash of the day could be the match between Brett Clark's Cambridge C who meet the goal-happy D2's on the No. 3 pitch (kick off 12.45pm).

Re-arranged fixture

The Cambridge first team will play their rescheduled Northern League division one fixture against Mangere United on Saturday June 19.

The round 7 match was postponed last month to allow both clubs to take part in the Chatham Cup. The fixture means our firsts will travel to Auckland for three consecutive games, facing Mangere, North Shore United and then Mt Albert-Ponsonby.

Clash of the Titans

The table-topping D2's won the Queen's Birthday Clash of the Titans match 7-1 against their interclub rivals, the D1's.

The match provided a large audience with a goalfest - and an aftermatch feast - as the club's Waikato Division D rivals turned on the entertainment.

To help make this match a special encounter for both sides and their supporters, the club produced a match programme with bio's for each squad, their fixtures lists and results so far and the league table that shows the importance of this fixture.

Long haul for first teamers

The Cambridge first team faced their longest trek of the season when they traveled to Tikipunga, Northland, to play regional side North Force at Queen's Birthday Weekend.

The June 5 fixture required about 11 hours' travel time - of which about nine and a half hours was driving time - to complete the 640km round journey. North Force won the fixture 3-1 and you can read a match report by clicking here.

North Force is a regionally-based club formed from the 2003 merger of Kamo and Tikipunga clubs with seven other Northland clubs becoming second-tier feeder clubs in 2006.

Until last weekend, North Force were unbeaten in the Northern League first division and topped the table. However they suffered an upset 2-1 defeat away to bottom-placed Pukekohe AFC, giving the south Aucklanders their first win in two seasons. Two North Force players were red-carded in that match so will likely miss the fixture against Cambridge.

The team earned the right to receive this souvenir programme by winning an auction at the club's recent Mystery Bottle Auction and Quiz Night, paying more than $100 for it. The publication will be available at the Vogel St clubrooms for the match or can be downloaded by clicking here.

Former Cambridge star back in town

All White striker Chris Wood (in action here against Bahrain) - who started his football career with Cambridge FC - was briefly back in town before joining the national team for its build up to next month's World Cup Finals.

Wood scored his first senior goal for Cambridge when he was 15 and less than four years later, he's about to play in the English Premier League as a professional with newly-promoted West Bromwich Albion.

Wood is one of the youngest members of the All Whites but will be carrying the best wishes and support of all his form club mates when New Zealand faces Italy, Slovakia and Paraguay.

First teamers help out young players

Midfielder Scott Parsonage (left) is coaching Matamata College Boys’ first XI and has already attended his Level 2 coaching course.

Top goalscorer Gareth Clark and winger Dima Slack are coaching the St Peter’s School Junior Boys’ B side, while first team newcomers Peter Loyd and Dan Podjursky are coaching beginners at Hautapu Primary School.

Radio stars get behind the reds

Breakfast radio stars KM, Stu and Toast (left) from Waikato's 92 More FM cheered on their favourite football side when they visited John Kerkhof Park for Cambridge's 2-2 draw against Pukekohe on May 1.

It was the radio team's first visit to our club since their station became key sponsors this season - and they enjoyed the match and the company of our supporters (plus a few beers afterwards over a game of fuseball). The trio are also looking forward to announcing our Junior Player of the Week awards live on air between 7.30am and 8am every Tuesday, so be listening!

Mystery Bottle Auction a big success

Cambridge FC members and friends raised a few laughs, a few dollars and a few eyebrows during a fun-packed social evening at the senior clubrooms in Vogel St on Saturday May 1.

The event was the club's annual Mystery Bottle Auction in which participants donated gift-wrapped bottles that were then auctioned to the highest bidders. Among the bottles were wines, liquor, beer, vinegar, sauce, pickled onions and cordial. D1 coach Harry Bomans discovered he had paid the best part of $20 for a bottle of water - but he took consolation when his team won the night's trivia quiz. The D2 team won an auction to have a souvenir match programme published for an upcoming game before the Fed 2 team stumped up the money to also buy a match programme.

Keziah wins our first award of the season

Keziah Clark, who plays for the 7th grade Tigers, is the first winner of Cambridge FC's new Junior Player of the Week Award.

Keziah learned of her achievement when KM, Stu and Toast from Waikato's 92 More FM rang her at home to announce the award live on air.

The radio show plans to announce our weekly award winner live on air every week during the 2010 season - so make sure you're listening between 7.30am and 8.00am every Tuesday to cheer on our young players! For more information about the awards, click here.

Cambridge on road for first cup tie

Cambridge FC's first team have drawn Westlake Boys' High School away in the final qualifying round of the 83rd Chatham Cup.

First team players go on air to promote club

Members of Cambridge FC's first team will become familiar voices on radio this season.

Having secured a three-year sponsorship deal between the club and Waikato's 92 More FM, four players went into the station's Hamilton studio to record a series of commercials that will be used to promote the club and its Northern League first division fixtures.

Our photo shows midfield-striker Gareth Clark recording his part of the commercials. Other players whose voices will feature were goalkeeper Oz McNamara, midfielder Wilfried Weber and right wing back Malcolm Matthews.

Tune into More FM to hear our players every week!

Radio stars get behind our club

Cambridge FC have an entire new team of supporters - KM, Stu and Toast, and the rest of the crew at Waikato's More FM 92.0.

                                                                                Stu, KM and Toast

After the success of the All Whites and Wellington Phoenix, the More FM breakfast team told their listeners they thought they should get into football this season and wondered which would be the best Waikato side to get behind.

Cambridge goalkeeper Ryan 'Oz' McNamara rang the show and quickly convinced them that our club deserved their support. In hardly no time at all, the radio station had agreed to become sponsors of Cambridge FC for the next three years. In return, More FM becomes our club's official radio station.

"Cambridge is a great team to support because we're young and we're taking on all these big clubs from Auckland," Oz told the breakfast team.

"That sounds good to us," Stu said. "We like to back the underdogs."

More FM's sponsorship will include weekly on-air promotion of Cambridge first team home games.

From late April, when the junior season starts, the radio station will also announce live on air the club's Junior Player of the Week. Watch this website for more details.

More FM has already supplied the club with a stack of bumper stickers so Cambridge FC players and supporters can show their support for the radio station.

You can visit KM, Stu and Toast's web page by clicking here.

Club puts faith in youth

Cambridge FC is backing its young players to see the club through the new Lotto Northern League first division season.

With the departure of some experienced players last season, new coaches Andrew Treanor and Josh Easby have promoted a number of promising players who featured in last season's successful Under 19 squad.

"We are taking the long view that developing these young players will give the club a stable first team for the next two or three years and give us something on which to build," Easby said.

Half the squad has Northern League experience but the rest will be making their debuts in a competition that has been restructured this season to allow for it to split into three divisions in 2011.

Each of the 16 first division sides will play each other once by early July when the competition will then split into two contests with end of season play-offs.  The final positions will decide which clubs play in which division next year.

Cambridge are expecting a tough campaign but the coaches are confident that their players have the character and determination to develop into a strong side.

March 2010 Tournament

The Cambridge FC football tournament, sponsored by Ricoh, took place over the weekend 13-14th March. 20 teams contested in 2 grades during what ended up being a hot dry spell of weather. The most notable performance of the five Cambridge teams came from the Athletic C team with 3 wins and 2 losses (one in the semi-final to a young Rotorua side).

The eventual winners were Claudelands Rovers, coached by Jim Keaney.

The photograph below shows Jim receiving the Brian Hoyland Memorial Trophy from Ricoh regional sales manager Russell Foster. His side won the 2010 Ricoh-sponsored Cambridge FC football tournament beating Te Awamutu 3-2 in the final.

On behalf of the organising committee, special thanks to Brett Clarke for managing the competition, Ricoh for their fantastic support, and to all the volunteers who helped with preparing the pitches and food/drinks. Everyone seemed to get something out of their games (a few blisters and sore muscles) and we thank all the teams who participated.

Competition photographs can be viewed in the photo album section, under CFC competitions.
